    The Story

    Last month I wrote about the first souvenirs I ever earned. Each one has a story behind it — a snapshot of where I was and what I was doing at the time. The Arizona State Souvenir, though, marks something even bigger for me: the restart of my geocaching journey.

    It’s hard to believe, but before earning this souvenir, I went 457 consecutive days without a find — from January 17, 2010, until April 18, 2011. That’s the longest break I’ve ever had from caching! Most people who know me would probably think it’s impossible for me to stop caching for that long, but life just got busy, and geocaching quietly drifted to the background.

    That all changed during a camping trip outside Laughlin, Nevada. We were staying just across the river in Arizona with some of my wife’s cousins. Their youngest had recently started geocaching and was eager to show off their new hobby. Somewhere between campfire stories and s’mores, I remembered — hey, I have a geocaching account!

    So the next day, I joined in the hunt. That decision led us to a small dirt pull-off along Highway 95, right by the Bullhead Historical Museum.

    The Cache

    My Log: “Log was full so we added another piece of paper.”

    The cache description was simple but charming:

    “Dirt pull-off off of Hwy. 95. Heavy traffic. Ample parking.
    Log only. Bring pencil. History of the many types of trains in this area. There were ore, wagon, mule and camel trains in this area which are recorded in the museum.
    If you find this cache please let the owner know exact coordinates.”

    It was a quick find — nothing fancy, just a small container tucked away off the highway — but it had something more meaningful attached to it: a sense of rediscovery. That humble log sheet reignited my enthusiasm for the game.

    The cache itself was archived on December 16, 2018, after the museum moved to a new location, but it still lives on in my memory (and my finds list in iCaching).

    The Takeaway

    That single find broke my long streak of inactivity and opened the door to a whole new chapter of caching adventures. I went on to find over 200 caches in 2011, and I’ve been caching steadily ever since.

    It’s funny how one small, dusty container on the side of an Arizona highway can set off a chain reaction — reconnecting you with a hobby, a community, and a sense of exploration you didn’t realize you’d been missing.

    This small traveler began its journey in October 2023 as part of the Cache Advance Cache Crate, inspired by the colorful traditions of Día de los Muertos — Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Adorned with vibrant symbols of remembrance, this tag set out into the world to celebrate life, memory, and connection.

    Each stop it makes is a candle lit for remembrance. Each photo it gathers is a story shared.

    The Mission

    The Day of the Dead Tag travels to places that honor those who came before us — cemeteries, memorials, and historic sites filled with stories of the past.
    Its mission is to remind geocachers that every place, like every person, has a story worth celebrating.

  • My Geocaching Souvenirs: A Journey of Hidden Treasures

    Welcome to the first post in a new series where I’ll be sharing the geocaching souvenirs I’ve earned over the years. This series will come out on the second Tuesday of each month, giving me a chance to revisit my geocaching adventures and the digital mementos I’ve collected along the way.

    What Are Geocaching Souvenirs?

    Souvenirs are digital badges added to your geocaching profile when you complete certain achievements. They can be earned for finding a cache in a particular state or country, attending events, or participating in special promotions. Think of them as stamps in a virtual passport that document your geocaching journey.

    My First Souvenirs

    Every geocacher remembers their first find—and with it often comes their first souvenirs. For me, that milestone happened on January 3, 2010, when I logged my very first cache: High School View (GC21522), which is still active today!

    That single find unlocked my first two souvenirs:

    Even better, I wasn’t alone on this adventure. In my log for the cache, I noted: “Found it with my son on his 1st geocache.” That makes these first souvenirs even more special—they’re tied not just to a milestone in my geocaching journey, but also to a memory we shared together.

    Looking Back

    At the time, I didn’t realize how big of a role souvenirs would play in my experience. They’ve become a way to look back on where I’ve been, the caches I’ve discovered, and the adventures I’ve had along the way.

  • Puffin on the Trail – The Feathered First of My Trackable Friends

    Some geocachers collect coins, some trade swag, and me? I collect companions that ride along for the adventure. And this one’s special—it’s my first official trackable.

    Who is Puffin on the Trail?

    This little stuffed puffin was a gift from my daughter after her recent trip to Iceland. Soft, sturdy, and sporting that classic “I don’t care” puffin expression, he’s ready to tackle trails, climbs, and caches with me. Think of him as the perfect co-pilot for my mountain and gravel biking quests.

    Why He’s Joining the Adventure

    If you’ve read my last ramble about Icelandic Puffin – The feathered fuel for my mountain and gravel biking quests, you know he’s more than a keepsake. He’s my trail buddy, tucked into my hydropack, bouncing over rocks, mud, and hills that make you question your life choices.

  • Hedwig Spreads His Wings

    Every geocacher has a few special companions who tag along on the trail. For me, one of those is Hedwig—a little owl with a big heart and even bigger travel dreams.

    You might remember from a previous post that Hedwig usually rides along in my pack, keeping quiet watch as I wander up dusty switchbacks or meander through pine-scented trails. He doesn’t need spells or charms—his superpower is a sharp eye for clever hides and a calm presence on long hikes.

    But Hedwig wasn’t always my sidekick. He actually came to me thanks to my daughter, fresh from her trip to London. What started as a fun souvenir idea has now taken flight as a bona fide trackable.

    The Mission

    Hedwig’s mission isn’t to rack up air miles or hop across borders. Instead, he’s a dedicated trail companion—joining me on local hikes, caching outings, and outdoor wanderings. His job is to keep watch from my pack, help sniff out those tricky hides, and add a little character to every adventure.

    London Bear is a pint‑sized plush, a token of curiosity and affection with origins across the pond. My daughter gifted him after spotting how lonely GeoSta2Key looked on adventures. I couldn’t argue with that—so London Bear joined the crew, small in size but big in spirit.

  • GeoSta2Key: The Road Warrior of Geocaching

    Back in 2018, the idea for a blog post was scribbled down — a tribute to a little stuffed animal who had quietly been racking up miles, joining cache hunts, and carving out its place in geocaching lore. But GeoSta2Key’s story started long before that. Its first cache find? 2015.

    GeoSta2Key isn’t just another trackable. It’s the first of our stuffed animal cache companions — the original plush pathfinder. The one who turned a quirky idea into a tradition. The road warrior who’s always ready, whether stuffed under the truck seat or leading the charge to the next find.

    From Fast Food Toy to FC Barcelona Legend

    GeoSta2Key started life as a Chick-fil-A cow, a funny little plush with the familiar “Eat Mor Chikin” message. At the time, it got tossed in with our hiking gear, more of a sidekick than a star — a soft, silly mascot for the trail.

    Then everything changed with one thoughtful gift.

    After a trip to Spain, my daughter brought back a tiny FC Barcelona jersey, and it happened to fit the cow perfectly. That was the moment. The Chick-fil-A cow became a fútbol-loving, travel-hardened geocaching legend — and GeoSta2Key was officially born.

  • My Sta2Key Geocoin: 180,000+ Miles of Adventure

    If there’s one thing I never leave home without, it’s my Sta2Key Geocoin. Officially activated on June 23, 2012, in Nevada, United States, this gold ROT13 Decoder Key Chain geocoin has been riding shotgun on my geocaching journey—and every other journey, really—for over 13 years. As of today (July 14, 2025), it’s clocked a staggering 180,255.7 miles.

    More Than Just a Coin

    This isn’t just any geocoin. The Sta2Key was the very first trackable my family bought for me when I began geocaching. At the time, I’d already found over 300 caches (oops—should’ve started logging those miles sooner!). From that day forward, it’s been attached to my GPS device like a loyal sidekick, helping me decode cache hints on the fly and adding an extra layer of geeky fun to the hunt.

    A Little History—and Mystery—Behind the Coin

    Designed as a functional ROT13 decoder, this geocoin celebrates one of the quirkiest parts of geocaching: secret hints written in cipher. ROT13, short for “rotate by 13 places,” was used way back in the 1st century BC, allegedly by Julius Caesar himself (and hey, rumor has it he loved geocaching, too). The cipher simply swaps each letter for the one 13 places down the alphabet—making it perfect for keeping geocache hints secret unless you’re in the know.

    Whenever I spot a cryptic hint like “Guvf vf n fznyy pbyhza,” my Sta2Key is ready to reveal the answer (“This is a small column,” in case you’re wondering).

    Ride-or-Die Trackable

    Unlike most trackables that travel from cache to cache, my Sta2Key is a true personal traveler. It’s permanently attached to my keychain—meaning it goes wherever I go, whether I’m hiking up mountain trails, navigating city streets for urban caches, or simply making a late-night grocery run. It’s less “trackable in the wild” and more “can’t-leave-home-without-it.”
